Ironman 70.3 Pucon opens the 2016 long distance calendar
“World’s most beautiful triathlon race”, Ironman 70.3 Pucon (Chile), opens the 2016 long distance race calendar on Sunday. The 2015 champions are back to defend their titles: Barbara Riveros Diaz from Chile and Australian Richie Cunningham.
The women’s race promises to be more competitive than last year, 2-time champion Valentina Carvalho (CHI) is in great shape and the runner-up in Kona Rachel Joyce (GBR) will also be racing. Another strong Chilean is Pamela Tastes.
The men’s field is even more impressive with former Champion Daniel Fontana (Italy), Benjamin Munizaga (CHI), Ben Collins (USA), Pipo Barraza (CHI), Luciano Taccone (ARG), Mario Elias (ARG) and Brazilians Fabio Carvalho, Igor Amorelli, Bruno Matheus, Danilo Melo and the 2011 champion, Guilherme Manocchio.
In addition to the elite, there will be 1,200 age groupers athletes, set to conquer the half ironman distance of 1,900, swimming, 90km cycling and 21km of running. The highlight of the race is the Villarica volcano, which erupted in 2015, a few weeks after the competition.
