Frodeno Announces Retirement: Is Frodo the GOAT?

In a recent Instagram post, German pro triathlete Jan Frodeno has mentioned that the Milwaukee PTO US Open will be his 2nd last dance.   Meaning, his appearance in the Ironman World Championships in Nice on September will be his swan song race as a Professional Triathlete.

With his retirement, it begs the question:  Is FRODO the greatest of all time?  Frodeno’s list of accolades is pretty impressive and merits an argument to the GOAT stature.

  • 2008 Gold Medalist in Beijing
  • Winner 2015, 2016 and 2019 Ironman World Championships
  • Winner 2015 and 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships
  • 2016 Challenge Roth Champion

The famous Ironman 70.3 World Championships battle with Javier Gomez and Alistair Brownlee at South Africa was a race for the ages.  In his prime, Frodeno won almost every race he entered.  It is in the last few years that Frodeno struggled with injuries, including a classy finish at Kona in 2017, completing the race despite a leg injury.

A fairy tale ending with a win in his last two races is hardly surprising.  For now, let us know where you think Frodeno’s career rank in the hierarchy of Triathlon’s greatest.
