Challenge Family Joins PTO’s Triathlon World Tour Following Acquisition

The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has announced a major step in reshaping the global triathlon landscape by acquiring a majority shareholding in Challenge Family from Y11 Sports & Entertainment. The strategic move positions Challenge Family as a cornerstone of the newly established Triathlon World Tour, slated to debut in 2027.

According to PTO CEO Sam Renouf, the acquisition marks a milestone for the sport’s professional and commercial unification.

“This acquisition and investment into Challenge Family is a significant moment in the PTO journey,” Renouf stated. “Challenge Family’s respected event platform, community-driven ethos, and operational expertise make them a natural partner… as we work with World Triathlon to create a single brand and competition structure that helps professionals, amateurs, fans, media, sponsors, and other stakeholders more clearly understand and engage with our sport.”

The announcement follows World Triathlon’s Deloitte Report , which highlighted the sport’s fragmented ecosystem and emphasized the need to evolve from a technically driven to a commercially driven global model. The Triathlon World Tour—jointly developed by PTO and World Triathlon—aims to address that by presenting a unified global series that connects all levels of competition.

Challenge Family’s Global Role

For over two decades, Challenge Family has built a global reputation for its athlete-first approach, innovation, and strong local race communities. Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam said the partnership aligns perfectly with their long-term vision.

“Joining forces with the PTO marks an important evolution in our journey,” Vlam said. “This partnership allows us to preserve what makes Challenge Family unique while contributing to a unified, globally recognized series that strengthens the sport’s long-term growth and visibility.”

The Triathlon World Tour will feature a tiered competition structure, combining the existing T100 Triathlon World Tour and the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS)—to be rebranded as the T100 and T50 World Championship Series, respectively. Beneath each will sit newly formed “Challenger” series, offering a clear qualification pathway toward world championship status in both distances.

Expanding the Global Calendar

From 2027 onward, the PTO envisions expanding the Triathlon World Tour to around 80 events worldwide. For 2026, Challenge Family’s existing calendar of more than 35 races will continue under its current branding, including the recent Challenge Sir Bani Yas in Abu Dhabi.

World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany welcomed the move, describing it as a major step toward greater unity and sustainability within the sport.

“By incorporating more events and welcoming private organisers to the Tour, we are creating a more unified and robust ecosystem,” Arimany said. “This expansion will provide significantly more opportunities for athletes and unlock greater commercial potential for all stakeholders.”

Further details—including the official Triathlon World Tour branding, competition tiers, and organizational structure—will be unveiled later in 2026, where fans, athletes, and partners will get their first full look at the sport’s new unified global framework.
