IRONMAN World Championship Returns to Single-Day Racing in Kona for 2026

In a landmark move that has thrilled the global triathlon community, IRONMAN has announced that the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship will return to a single-day race format in Kona, Hawaiʻi. For the first time since 2019, both men and women will compete on the same day—October 10, 2026—restoring a tradition that many consider the soul of long-distance triathlon.

The decision follows months of deliberation and a comprehensive survey involving more than 10,000 athletes, volunteers, and stakeholders. According to IRONMAN officials, the feedback overwhelmingly supported a unified championship day on the Big Island, citing athlete experience, community spirit, and historical legacy as driving factors.

The shift marks a departure from the split-location format introduced in 2023, where men and women alternated racing in Kona and Nice, France. While the move was intended to broaden participation and global reach, it also led to unforeseen drawbacks—including reduced return rates, especially among female qualifiers.

In response, IRONMAN is not only reuniting the World Championship in Kona, but also reimagining the race-day experience. The 2026 event is expected to host nearly 3,000 athletes, with enhanced race logistics that include staggered starts and equitable broadcast coverage for both male and female professionals. These updates aim to elevate fairness, storytelling, and fan engagement without compromising race integrity.

“We’ve listened closely to our athletes, the Kona community, and our broader triathlon family,” said IRONMAN CEO Scott DeRue. “Bringing everyone back together in Kona on one day is about more than logistics—it’s about honoring tradition, unity, and excellence.”

While Kona reclaims its role as the exclusive host of the full-distance IRONMAN World Championship in 2026, Nice will remain a key partner in the IRONMAN ecosystem. The French Riviera city is set to host the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in both 2026 and 2028, with an option for 2030, reinforcing IRONMAN’s commitment to international expansion.
