Moysan (FRA), Trupa (PHI) Grab Elite Titles at Powerman Malaysia

A record number of 4,000 duathletes from over 30 countries converged at Putrajaya City, just south of Kuala Lumpur, for the 2023 Powerman Malaysia.  It is regarded as the world’s biggest duathlon race.

Men’s top seed Malo Moysan of France lived up to his pre-race billing and emerged as men’s elite champion, finishing in 2:40:45.

In contrast to the men’s race, the women’s elite needed all the last meters to decide the champion.   The thrilling sprint finish was won by Filipina Merry Joy Trupa (3:13:34) who out nosed fellow countryman Rhia Stawicki (3:13:35) by one second.  Stawicki was judged as the women’s top seed based on recent performances.

Moysan and Trupa each walked home with $850 usd as top prize.

Filipino athletes were a force in the elite race, grabbing four of the eligible podium spots.  Multiple Southeast Asian Games medalists John Rambo Chicano finished runner-up (2;44:00) to the Frenchman while Maynard Pecson completed the podium spot in 2:49:17.

Singaporean Yong Man Yun prevented an all-Filipino podium by taking home the bronze in the women’s elite race with a time of 3:19:16.

The 18th Powerman Malaysia was organised by Fresh Events Asia and is now considered the biggest race in the stable of Powerman Duathlon events.
