Nearly 2000 Athletes Participate in the Ironman 70.3 Phu Quoc Weekend as Japan’s Mizushima and Vietnam’s Kim Quong Grab First Overall Finisher Honors

  • Nearly 2,000 athletes took part in the 2023 BIM Group IRONMAN 70.3 Phu Quoc triathlon festival.
  • Kenshin Mizushima from Japan topped the men’s podium while Nguyen Thi Kim Cuong, in her first IRONMAN 70.3, led a Vietnamese sweep of the women’s podium.

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam – November 20th , 2023 – The windy shores of Phu Quoc witnessed a spectacular showcase of endurance, sportsmanship, and determination as the inaugural BIM Group IRONMAN 70.3 Phu Quoc 2023 drew to a close on November 19th, 2023. Nearly 2,000 participants from 47 countries and territories gathered to compete in this new challenge which unfolded with great success.

The event has also put the captivating island of Phu Quoc in the global spotlight as an emerging destination for sports tourism. With its stunning landscapes, challenging race courses, and world class resorts, the local and global triathletes, along with their families and friends, were treated to a weekend of competition, entertainment and lasting memories.

In the male category, the athletes demonstrated their unique strengths right from the beginning. The young Japanese athlete Kenshin Mizushima took the lead in the swimming leg with an excellent finishing time of only 00:27:13, Sang Whan Oh showed his superiority in the bike leg with a record of 02:11:24. Among the top athletes, Andy Wibowo showcased the best performance in the run leg, completing it in just 01:29:21.

In the end, Kenshin Mizushima showed steadfast determination to take home the victory, crossing the finish line in 4:22:48, 4 minutes faster than runner-up Indonesian Andy Wibowo. Sang Whan Oh finished third on the podium.

Among the female competitors, all athletes showed impressive determination in their quest for the podium. After a day of intense competition, Nguyen Thi Kim Cuong emerged as the champion, crossing the finish line with a time of 05:06:41. 

Trailing closely behind her, Hanh Nguyen secured the second position with a time of 05:10:04, while Nguyen Thi Tra My  claimed the third spot with a time of 05:21:47.

Kenshin Mizushima – First Place Male Age Group Overall – shared : “Oh, man, what a day! I’m overwhelmed right now by joy, relief, and gratitude for my fellow athletes. Thank you for bringing this new IRONMAN 70.3 to Vietnam, and for giving us a chance to experience a new destination and a new challenge in such a picturesque and welcoming setting.”

Nguyen Thi Kim Cuong – First Place Female Age Group Overall – expressed: “This is the first time I came to this beautiful island of Phu Quoc and participated in an IRONMAN 70.3 event. I’m so happy and grateful for this achievement. I genuinely hope to inspire women, especially Vietnamese women, to participate in the triathlon in the future.”
