Matt Hanson and Jackie Hering Claim Victories at the Inaugural Ironman 70.3 Traverse City Triathlon

The picturesque countryside of northern Michigan provided athletes with stunning scenery and a challenging course in the 2019 IRONMAN® 70.3® Traverse City triathlon that took place on Sunday. Athletes from across the globe made their way to the shores of Grand Traverse Bay in the Cherry Capital of the World to participate in the highly anticipated inaugural event. Matt Hanson Storm Lake, Iowa and Jackie Hering of Cottage Grove, Wis. battled an elite field of professional athletes to take the top honors with finishing times of 3:50:33 and 4:15:06, respectively.

The 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City triathlon saw over 2,300 athletes representing 40 states and 8 countries, territories, and regions start the race. One of more than 110 events in the global IRONMAN 70.3 Series, the IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City will begin with a 1.2-mile swim in West Grand Traverse Bay, followed by a 56-mile bike through Leelanau County and Benzie County into the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the town of Empire, and finally a 13.1-mile run along east side of Boardman Lake, finishing on Front Street in the heart of downtown Traverse City. The race awarded a total professional prize purse of $30,000 and 40 age-group qualifying slots to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place in Taupō, New Zealand.
