Matt Russell Claims Victory at 2019 Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon

Nearly 2,400 athletes converged in upstate New York to participate in the IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (July 28, 2019) – The Adirondack Mountains provided a picturesque backdrop for athletes from around the world during the 2019 edition of the ViewSPORT IRONMAN® Lake Placid triathlon. Matt Russell (Sarasota, Fla.) took top honors with a time of 8:27:57, while Joe Gambles (Tasmania, AUS) and Marc Duelsen (Stuttgart, DEU) rounded out the podium with times of 8:33:26 and 8:37:01, respectively.

The 2019 ViewSPORT IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon saw nearly 2,400 participants representing 49 states and 38 countries, regions, and territories start the race. Competitors ranged in age from 18-80 years old. One of more than 40 events in the global IRONMAN Series, athletes took on a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run throughout Lake Placid and its surrounding areas. The swim took place in the clear waters of Mirror Lake, while the two-loop bike course took athletes through the scenic and challenging Adirondack Mountains. The two-loop run course ventured through the town and back around Mirror Lake for a spectacular finish in the Olympic Speed Skating Oval.
