Regan, Santiago Overall Winners in Aboitiz Triathlon-Batangas, Philippines
Ben Regan of the Fitness First Triathlon team defended his overall men’s title, while Ines Santiago of WU Crew team grabbed the women’s overall crown in 2017 Aboitiz TRI in Pico de Loro Beach and Country Club in Hamilo Coast, Batangas, Philippines.
Ben Regan (30-34 age group winner) swam the day’s best swim split of 20:25, combined it with the 2nd best bike of 1:06:56 and 3rd best run of 43:53 to finish in 2:14:16. Regan was challenged by Mervin Santiago of Sante Barley Team (25-29 age group) who posted the day’s best bike and run split at 1:06:37 and 43:26. Santiago would finish 2nd overall (2:17:59) and tops in the men’s 25-29 age group category. Benji Zapanta of One Triathlon Team was 3rd overall, finishing with a time of 2:21:07.
On the women’s category, Ines Santiago (35-39 age winner) captured women’s overall title by combining her 2nd best swim of 24:38, 3rd best bike split of 1:19:46 and women’s best run of 50:57. Santoago’s time was 2:39:22. Completing top 3 were 30-34 champion Katelyn Kearney of Fitness First (2:49:21) and 25-29 titlist Kriska Sto. Domingo (2:53:07).
In an interview with Philstar.com, Ben Regan said “In the swim phase, the water felt choppy while the short rain made biking on the roads very tough so I had to be careful about speeding. In the run phase, I felt tired and the hill climb was also tough. I just endured and watched the distance between me and Mervin while I was leading. Overall it was a fulfilling experience and I look forward to next year’s event. ”
Overall team champions were Fitness First. Other age group winners were Andrea Villanueva and Neil Aynera (18-24), Jethro Karl Ramos (35-39), Bic Ferreira and Roman Menz (40-44), Evangeline Endaya and Simon Mortimer (45-49), Maria Carmina Ilagan (Female 50-above), John Villanueva (50-54), Eduardo Francisco (55-59) and Alfredo Santos (60-above).
