Sungailiat Triathlon Happening on April 22 in Bangka island, Indonesia
The 5th Annual Sungailiat Triathlon is set to return on Saturday, April 22nd, 2017 in the island of Bangka- Indonesia. In its 5th installment, the race is offering 3 distance categories: Long Distance (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run), Standard Distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) and Sprint Distance (750m swim, 27km bike, 5km run) with total prize money of 267 million Indonesian Rupiah ($20,100 usd) for overall and age group winners. A respectable prize purse for a race of its size.
This year, Tanjung Pesona Beach Resort will be the race venue of Sungailiat Triathlon 2017 where the start, transition area and finish for all 500 athletes will take place. Tanjung Pesona Beach Resort is located about 50 minutes from the airport of Depati Amir in Pangkalpinang and about 30minutes from neighboring resorts in Sungailiat. The resort will also host the pre-race carbo loading dinner as well as the post-race dinner and award presentation.
The race first started in 2013 with 150 athletes in Standard (Olympic) Distance and Sprint Distance. In 2014, the venue was moved to Tanjung Pesona Beach and a Long Distance category was added as an exhibition. The new category attracted many Indonesians who were looking to try to race the longer distance but with closer proximity to Jakarta where most of Indonesian triathletes are based in. There aren’t too many places in the archipelago where an organizer can hold a half iron distance triathlon, and to be able to feature one in Sungailiat Triathlon is truly a blessing. Triathletes will be able to swim in a calm and warm water of the Tanjung Pesona Bay before heading on to the bike course where they can enjoy the fantastic view of the coast line and beautiful landscape. The run course will take the athletes through some of the nearby villages where many students and locales will cheer for them as they pass.
