Ironman 70.3 Subic Bay: Best of Press Conference & Pre-race favorites withdraw from the race

The Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 Subic Bay is taking place tomorrow, March 8th with the pro field starting at 6.28am. At today’s Press Conference, the big news was the withdraw from Caroline Steffen due to illness, she made it to Subic Bay but won’t be starting. Rebekah Keat is another withdraw from the original start list. This will leave the women’s field very open with no clear pre-race favorite, which should make for a very exciting race.

On the men’s side, the withdraw came from Clayton Fettell, the uber swimmer and biker can have an impact in a race like Subic Bay as we discussed on our pre-race favorites analysis, we should now see Josh Amberger leading the swim and the big question is how far back, if at all, will Luke McKenzie be and who will be with him.
Josh Amberger comment on the Press Conference “That (swim and ride hard) has always been the strategy and is no secret to anyone racing here“. Other pre-race favorites are Craig Alexander and Tim Reed, who just turned 30 years old today.

Another highlight of the Press Conference was the presentation of the finisher medal by Sunrise Events CEO Fred Uytengsu, the medal is a Jeepney, the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines and also a symbol of the country.
Good luck to all athletes racing tomorrow and see you out there on the course!
