The final answer: shaved legs do make you faster

To shave or not to shave?

Athletes are always buying new aerodynamic gear aiming to get faster. Carbon wheels, aero bike frames, aero apparel and so on, but very often they ignore details that could make them just as fast, if not faster.

Shaving (or waxing) legs is an one of the oldest controversial topic in the sport. Some benefits are already known such as applying sunscreen, easier massage, road rash cleaning and faster wound healing. But what about race day performance?

To answer this question, Specialized ran tests on its own wind tunnel to compare the difference of a cyclist with hairy legs, then with shaved legs. The result is impressive, as the benefits of shaving are bigger than many of the very expensive gear, while a razor will cost you only a dollar or two.
